Hey friends, hope you had a great week! Welcome to this week’s Memory Dump, for those who are new here, this is my weekly (although bi-weekly as of late) newsletter for paid subscribers which I attempt to pack full of valuable information, resources and personal musings. This week’s is mostly resource based, but often I include some hidden history. You won’t want to miss the 9/11 conspiracy resources I’ll be providing in the coming weeks.
Every couple months, I will make one of the Memory Dump newsletters available to all subscribers - so here you go! If you enjoy this one, you’ll love getting these every week for the monthly price of a cup of coffee.
1. Ways to support Orthodox monasteries
One of the best ways you can help out Orthodox monasteries is by purchasing products from their shops. You will get totally unique products crafted and sold by the monks there while supporting the monastery. First, it should go without saying that when you buy Orthodox books, you should browse the seminary bookstore websites first. Here is a list of seminary bookstores you can check. Let me know in the comments if I missed any.
Here are some unique ways you can support various monasteries around the U.S.
Monthly coffee subscription from St. Tikhon’s coffee roasters, Burning Bush Coffee. I’ve been subbed for over a year and the beans are great quality. They just recently opened a physical coffee shop near the seminary where some of the monks and seminarians work.
Subscribe to The Orthodox Word, a monthly zine printed at St. Herman’s Monastery (co-founded by Fr. Seraphim Rose). I subscribe to the yearly printed editions, its really great value for just $19 a year. It contains stories from the Lives of the Saints that are not in the Synaxarion, so if you are interested in learning more about some of the modern saints, it is a great resource to have and for very cheap.
Bath & Home goods from Holy Cross Monastery. I personally love their scented candles, they smell very natural and not chemically at all. Their soaps are very good too. I buy gift baskets from here as Christmas presents for some parish friends.
Buy incense, icons, prayer ropes and prayer books from any of these places. You may already be doing this, but I will re-emphasize do not buy these things off Amazon, sellers on Amazon are making a profit from reselling those products and many of the Orthodox items from there are being sold by general religious and new age spiritual product retailers.
2. Orthodox Psychology
This is something I’ve been researching lately and it can be difficult to find resources on, so I’ve included some books and videos I’ve found here. Some are a bit pricey, but you can save the list somewhere for future reference. I only included Amazon links if the books are not available at any monastery bookstores.
Mental Disorders & Spiritual Healing: Teachings from the Early Christian East by Jean-Claude Larchet | Purchase: [Amazon]
Dynamis of Healing: Patristic Theology and the Psyche by Pia Sophia Chaudhari | Purchase: [Amazon]
Do You Know Yourself? Psychological Problems & the Spiritual Life by Archimandrite Symeon (Kragiopoulos) | Purchase: [St. John’s Bookstore]
Breaking the Chains of Addiction: How to Use Ancient Eastern Orthodox Spirituality to Free Our Minds and Bodies From All Addictions by Victor Mihailoff | Purchase: [Amazon]
Orthodox Psychotherapy: The Science of the Fathers by Metropolitan of Nafpaktos Hierotheos (Audiobook)
Orthodox Christianity and Therapy - Bishop Alexi of Alaska
Fr. Meletios Webber on Orthodox Psychotherapy & Addiction
3. What I’ve been listening to
In the past year or two, I really haven’t been listening to much music that has lyrics in it. I find it too distracting since the times I listen to music are mostly when I’m doing focused work. So this is some of the music I’ve been enjoying. They are all YouTube links because thats where I discover music, I subscribe to YouTube Premium since the music streaming collection includes obscure stuff like this that isn’t always on Spotify, plus no YouTube ads and background audio playing on mobile is a nice perk (yes I still consoom a lot of youtube, ok?)
Macroblank - I believe this is one guy who just rips a ton of samples and doesn’t even take credit for his own music since its mostly sampled. Really great stuff though, and the guy cranks out these albums like every couple months so he has a huge discography, you can check it on his Bandcamp. His aesthetic is great too, as you can see.
This is a channel I found that has a bunch of this “dark ambient” style music, which you can only really listen to in playlist form since these types of artists only release EP’s and singles. Good for focused work, not distracting.
I absolutely love Burial, he has been one of my favorite artists for years. His music is so hauntingly beautiful and his samples are otherworldly. There are also like 2 photos in existence of this guy, he has remained mostly anon his entire career. Can you tell I dig darker vibes when it comes to music?
4. Finance bros Discord
Are you a interested in crypto, traditional finance, precious metals, investing, side hustles etc? Let me invite you to our Discord server, we are a small but tight group of Orthodox Christians exploring various ways to generate income online and build a legacy for our families.
The link will expire in 7 days so make sure you jump in there quick.
5. Come and See
Some of you may have already seen this film, but I thought I’d share the YouTube link since its free on there, if you haven’t seen it, watch it. If you have, share this link with your friends. Its a gut wrenching Russian film about the tragedy of a child on the battlefield and the horrors of war. The cinematography is absolutely brilliant.
Alright friends, thats all for this week. Thank you for reading and as always, I hope you got some value out of this one. Stay tuned for some more articles I will be publishing in the coming weeks. I appreciate all your support!
In Christ,
Anthony
